If you are like most people, you may be skeptical about investing in an MLM business as they are often regarded to be scams. One of the main reasons why Multi-Level Marketing businesses have such a divisive reputation is because some of these companies usually turn out to be scams that sell low-quality products. However, MLMs are still popular as they offer the desirable opportunity to work from the comfort of your home and earn a bit of money on the side. Some people have even found success working with MLM companies, which is another reason why it may seem like an attractive money-making option. Here is a look at Youngevity, an MLM company, to determine if it is worth investing your time and money in.
WHAT IS YOUNGEVITY?
Youngevity is an MLM company within the health and wellness niche that was founded in 1997 by Dr. Joel D. Wallach and is currently based in California, United States. Wallach has an extensive background in veterinary medicine. In 1982, he attained his doctorate in naturopathic medicine, which means that he is not a conventional doctor. Currently, his son Steve serves as the CEO of Youngevity. The company’s product range includes essential oils, powdered juice drinks, and nutritional supplements, to mention a few.
WHAT RANGE OF PRODUCTS DOES YOUNGEVITY SELL?
Here are some of the products sold by the company and their prices:
- Youngevity Fitshake
This is described as an all-natural digestible protein powder that is meant to build and maintain lean muscle mass while burning fat at the same time. It is made up of ingredients such as whey protein concentrate, organic flax seeds, bone broth protein concentrate, and organic apple cider. The retail price is $68.99 while the wholesale price is $54.95.
- Collagen Peptides
This is a powder dietary supplement that is intended to boost the health of your skin, nails, joints, hair, and immune system. The key ingredients used in its formulation include fish collagen and eggshell membrane collagen concentrate. The retail price of the product is $34.99, while the wholesale price is $27.95.
- Upset Tummy Treats
This product is described as natural, gourmet treats that are meant to alleviate stomach problems in dogs. Some of the ingredients incorporated in the product include mint activated charcoal, parsley, canola, and fat-free milk. The retail price is $19.99 while the wholesale price is $16
- Wake Well
Wake Well is touted as a scientifically-based patented formula that supposedly enhances your biochemistry and provides you with energy, mood improvement, and focus. It is made up of superfoods and flavonoids. The retail price of the product is $45.99 while the wholesale price is $36.95.
- Renu IQ
This product is described as a proprietary blend of phytonutrients, adaptogens, and vitamins that is formulated to improve the activity of your brain when it is needed. Other than boosting brain function, it also boosts mood and enhances overall brain health. The retail price of Renu IQ is $78.99 while the wholesale price is $62.95.
- Mineral Man Charcoal Scrub
This product is described as a rejuvenating, detoxifying, and nourishing charcoal face scrub that gives the face a new feel. The main ingredients that make up the product include activated carbon, pumice, bamboo stem extract, and orange oil. The retail price is $43.99 while the wholesale price is $34.95.
- Youngevity Toner
This is a product that cleanses, moisturizes, and adds a layer of protection to the skin. Key ingredients of the product include witch hazel, green tea, rosemary, chamomile, and cucumber extracts. The retail price is $39.99 while the wholesale price is $31.95.
- Carrot Seed Essential Oil (10 ml)
This is described as a pure, therapeutic oil that is beneficial to the digestive, lymphatic, urinary and muscular systems of the body. The retail price of this essential oil is $59.99 while the wholesale price is $47.99.
WHAT IS THE COST OF BECOMING A YOUNGEVITY AFFILIATE?
To get started as a distributor for Youngevity, you are required to pay an enrollment fee of $30. This is renewed annually as $49.95. As a distributor, you have access to wholesale pricing and can also get free shipping on auto-ship for some of the products that cost over $99. Once you are enrolled, there are three packs that you can choose from:
- Business Startup
This costs $30. When you opt to purchase this pack, you will receive a welcome pack, a replicated website, an experienced business coach, and up to 30% off on some of the products.
- Business Essentials
The price of this pack starts at $159 and goes up to $286.99. In addition to what is included in the business startup pack, you also receive a sample of products that you can try out.
- Business Builder
This pack costs $499. In addition to what is included in the business essentials pack, you get to receive even more products when you buy this pack.
Once you select a business kit, you are then required to set up a distributor account by providing your name, social security number, company name, email address, phone number, and location. You will also need to select a username and a password for your account.
THE YOUNGEVITY COMPENSATION PLAN
According to the Youngevity compensation plan, distributors receive retail commissions, coded bonus commissions, and residuals through a unilevel compensation plan.
To become an associate, you are required to generate a minimum of 50 personal qualifying volume (PQV) a month.
- Brand Associate
To raise in ranks from an associate to a brand associate, you have to generate at least 100 PQV in a month.
- Sales Associate
For the sales associate rank, you are required to generate at least 150 PQV in a month and recruit a minimum of three active associates.
- Senior Associate
To attain the senior associate rank, you have to generate a minimum of 200 PQV within a month, have 3 levels of downlines that bring in at least 1,000 group qualifying volume (GQV) each month, and recruit a minimum of three active brand associates.
- 1-Star Executive
For this rank, you need to generate at least 250 PQV within a month, have 3 levels of downlines that bring in a minimum of 5,400 GQV each month, and recruit at least three active sales associates.
- 2-Star Executive
To achieve this rank, you are required to generate at least 300 PQV within a month, have 3 levels of downlines that bring in a minimum of 7,500 GQV each month, and recruit at least three active 1-star executive distributors.
- 3-Star Executive
This rank requires that you bring in a minimum of 300 PQV within a month, have three levels of downlines that generate at least 10,500 GQV each month, and recruit a minimum of five active 1-star executive distributors.
- 4-Star Executive
To qualify as a 4-star executive, you need to generate a minimum of 300 PQV within a month, have three levels of downlines that generate at least 27,000 GQV each month, and recruit a minimum of six active 1-star executive distributors.
- 5-Star Executive
For this rank, you are required to generate a minimum of 300 PQV within a month, have three levels of downlines that generate at least 43,200 GQV each month, and recruit a minimum of nine active 1-star executive distributors.
- Emerald Ambassador
To attain the emerald ambassador rank, you need to generate at least 300 PQV within a month, have three levels of downlines that generate a minimum of 75,000 GQV each month, have a minimum of 750,000 overall qualifying volume (OQV), and recruit at least 12 active 1-star executive distributors.
- Ruby Ambassador
To qualify for this rank, you have to generate at least 300 PQV within a month, have three downlines that generate a minimum of 100,000 GQV each month, have at least 1,500,000 OQV, and recruit at least 12 active 1-star executive distributors.
- Diamond Ambassador
For the diamond ambassador rank, you have to generate a minimum of 300 PQV within a month, have three downlines that generate at least 43,200 GQV each month, have a minimum of 3,000,000 OQV and recruit a qualified 5-star executive.
- Black Diamond Ambassador
To achieve the black diamond ambassador rank, you are expected to generate at least 300 PQV within a month, have three downlines that generate a minimum of 43,200 GQV, have at least 6,000,000 OQV, and recruit a qualified 5-star executive.
- Global Residual Commissions
The amount in global residual commissions that a distributor earns is determined by the rank that they attain:
- An associate earns 5% in global residual commissions on the first two levels
- A brand associate earns 8% on the first two levels and 7% on the third level.
- A sales associate earns 8% on the first two levels, 7% on the third level, and 6% on the fourth one.
- A senior associate earns 8% on the first two levels, 7% on the third level, and 6% on the fourth and fifth levels.
- A 1 star executive earns 8% on the first two levels, 7% on the third level, 6% on the fourth and fifth ones, 8% on the sixth one, and 2% on the seventh, eighth, and ninth levels. The commissions remain the same from this rank up to the black diamond rank.
- Coding Bonuses
These bonuses are also awarded based on the ranks of distributors:
- Sales associate earns $15
- Senior associate $35
- 1-star executive earns up to $100
- 2-star executive earns up to $140
- 3-star executive earns up to $170
- 4-star executive earns up to $180
- 5-star executives through to black diamond ambassadors earn up to $190
- Quick Start Bonus
When you recruit a distributor who manages to make sales within their first month, you become eligible to earn up to 30% quick start bonus on the sales that they make. This bonus is only available for up to 750 business volume (BV) per order. To qualify for this bonus, you are required to have a minimum of 100 PV on auto-ship.
- The company has been around for a while
Youngevity has been in existence for slightly over two decades. This longevity is quite rare when it comes to MLM companies as most of them tend to fold within the first few years of business. This could mean that Youngevity is probably doing something right.
- Youngevity is a member of the DSA
Youngevity is a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA). This is an organization that has strict regulations that require member companies to operate legitimately.
- It is a public traded company
The fact that Youngevity is a publicly traded company gives it more credibility than other companies in the same niche.
- A very wide product range
Youngevity has over 2,000 products for sale, something that presents a serious drawback for both distributors and consumers. For consumers, it will be difficult to settle on the right product to buy. On the other hand, it will be difficult for distributors to fully comprehend and remember the specifications for each product.
- The cost to get started as a distributor is not the cheapest
To become a distributor, you first have to pay a membership fee (which becomes annual) before selecting a package, with the costs ranging from $30-$499.
- There is no scientific backup to prove that their products work
Although the products sold by the company are generally touted to have positive impacts on your health, there is no scientific evidence provided that can be used to back up these claims. This may discourage customers from purchasing these products.
- Low income potential
Due to how the company is structured and the low payouts, there is not much money to be made working as a distributor.
- You have to constantly recruit new distributors
To rise in ranks and earn higher commissions, you are required to bring in new distributors on every level. This is one of the hardest aspects of an MLM business model.
Although Youngevity is a genuine company that is recognized by the DSA, the business opportunity it presents is hardly ideal due to the low earning potential. Due to the MLM structure of the company, only those that have achieved the highest ranks get to earn a significant amount of money. Therefore, unless you are willing to dedicate most of your time and energy to constantly recruiting new distributors and meeting the strict sales requirements, I would not recommend investing in Youngevity.
WHAT IS BETTER THAN YOUNGEVITY?
MLM is not for everyone! I tried Amway and a few others and hated pushing stuff on friends and family that they either did not want or did not need. I spent money and time I did not have for very little if any return.
